What is the function of the Department of Labor as it relates to immigration?

The United States Department of Labor, commonly referred to as "DOL" is a department of the federal government.

The Immigration and Nationality Act, requires that some aliens seeking admission on the basis of employment must obtain a temporary or permanent labor certification from the Department of Labor. The Department of Labor oversees the administrative procedures in obtaining alien labor certifications as well as labor condition applications for certain nonimmigrant categories.
