What is the function of the Department of Homeland Security as it relates to immigration?

The United States Department of Homeland Security, commonly referred to as "USDHS" or "DHS", is a department of the federal government.

The Immigration and Nationality Act, regulates the admission of aliens into the United States. The Act designates the Attorney General (Department of Homeland Security) and the Secretary of State (Department of State) as the principal administrators of its provisions.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (commonly referred to as the "USCIS"), is a division of the Department of Homeland Security and performs most of the Attorney General's function under the Act and enforces and applies the immigration laws of the United States. The USCIS previously was known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service "INS".
